Family Affair – MFSB

MFSB’s “Family Affair” instrumental is one of the DOPEst Bboy Sounds by the legendary mashup of musicians from Philadelphia.

Among many massive tracks from MFSB, their instrumental cover of “Family Affair” stands out, even among legendary hits like their take on Curtis Mayfield‘s “Freddie’s Dead” that were included on the self-titled debut album.

The track was also featured on RZA and Keb Darge’s Kings of Funk collection alongside many Hip-Hop foundations.

Suede Chief

The original 1971 version by Sly & the Family Stone featured a drumline generated by a rhythm box, an early version of a beat machine, and became the first number-one hit to do so.

MFSB (according to the “clean” interpretation, Mother Father Sister Brother) was a pool of more than thirty studio musicians based at Philadelphia’s famed Sigma Sound Studios.[1] They worked closely with the production team of Gamble and Huff and producer/arranger Thom Bell, and backed up such groups as Harold Melvin & the Blue Notesthe O’Jaysthe Stylisticsthe SpinnersWilson Pickett, and Billy Paul.[1]
