Tribe Vibes – Jungle Brothers

Another Jungle Brothers classic from 1989, the Funky Classic jam “Tribe Vibes”:

As usual, the Jungle Brothers (@junglebros4life) come with only the funkiest production, rhymes, and overall feeling, and “Tribe Vibes” is no exception, drawing samples, from Funk, Disco, Soul, and way beyond.

Handling production for the album “Done By the Forces of Nature” with the very awesome Kool DJ Red Alert managing the mixing, “Tribe Vibes” joins a list of dope tracks on Brothers’ second studio album.

From a New York Times review:

The Jungle Brothers’ second album, ”Done by the Forces of Nature” (Warner Bros. 26072; all three formats), is a mass of allusions, not only to hip-hop and black culture at large, but also to the record itself, enriching an always solid dance beat. References to the Jump Up, the Freak, the Hustle and the Jerk float by, and Billy Squier’s ”Big Beat,” an often-sampled drum track, is quoted again here. Ella Fitzgerald’s ”A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” Africa Bambaataa’s ”Planet Rock” and endless references to Africa go by. The members of the group call themselves the JB’s, the same as James Brown’s backup band. It’s an Afrocentric history they’re talking about: In one rap, they say, ”History [in school] meant nothing to me,” and the line ”Christopher discovered America” is greeted with a ripe ”Yeah, sure!” If the record has a fault, it’s an occasionally goofy tone; a sodden paean called ”African Woman” ends up being condescending.

Jungle Brothers sampled from another set of Bboy legends, The Blackbyrds. Can you spot the sample in “Blackbyrds Theme”?

(Hint: It’s around 2:25…)
