No Said Date – Masta Killa

Masta Killa took the Bboy World by storm in 2004 on an album called “No Said Date”, featuring a wealth of Wu-Tang MCs and outsiders, producers, and featurettes which included the last musical performance by Ol’ Dirty Bastard before his death in the same year.

If you’re a Bboy or Bgirl and you’ve been to an event in the last decade, you know this sound quite well:

The title track “No Said Date,” along with the single “Digi Warfare,” call back to the original, early days of Hip-Hop. The absence of mainstream Hip-Hop’s common themes like money, misogyny, and arbitrary violence make this a diamond in the rough of 2004.

With emerging voices of the time, modern Hip-Hop was changing into the form we see most often today, both in sound and spirit. Masta Killa’s “No Said Date” album, along with his 2006 follow-up and the records being pushed out by like-minded and equally styled and talented artists (among them many Wu-Tang Clan members) kept the true Hip-Hop heads afloat when the mainstream once again turned the radio sound to what it is today.

Peep this review of “No Said Date” by James Corne in Rap Reviews:

More than a decade after their gallant effrontery into the industry with “Enter the 36 Chambers” the sordid supergroup known as the Wu-Tang Clan has finally revealed their 9th and final chamber, the Masta Killa. From his first prolific words, “Homicide is illegal and death is the penalty!”, to his long overdue debut, “No Said Date,” Masta Killa has proven himself the most selfless, loyal member of the clan. He stood strong through the group’s triumphant rise and reign, and the tragedy of their wistful decline back down to the underground. He has stood the sandstorm of time and laid murderous versus on almost every Wu-Tang release over the last ten years, keeping his sword sharp but never to unsheathe it for personal glorification. To say that MK has paid his dues is a gross understatement.
