Black Nostaljack (Kid Capri RMX) – Camp Lo

Camp Lo’s “Black Nostaljack”, from their first album Uptown Saturday Night, was already a #dope track and video, but then Kid Capri busted out this remix, using the instrumental and other elements from Run DMC’s “Beats to the Rhyme”:

Uptown Saturday Night has been one of my favorite albums since I bought it in early 1997, when “Luchini aka This Is It” was making the Camp Lo fellows famous.

Camp Lo has been steadily putting out albums and mixtapes over two decades, dropping hits up and down the block. Lo’s unique style, including their ultra-slang, rap techniques, and innovative themes were and remain so contrary to mainstream rap, that Camp Lo has had it’s own niche since their premiere.

Suede Chief

An interesting quote from a Hip Hop Game interview with Sonny Cheeba:

Everything would have been straight BX. It would be the BX and b-boy music. Ultimately it was the 70s soul that influenced the b-boys coming up and the whole graffiti and breakdancing and all of that. That’s what raised us. It was a combination of that.

Some background on Camp Lo MCs Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede from Camp Lo’s Facebook:

Naturally going against the grain in their daily lives as individuals, as a team, the lyrics and sounds of legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Marvin Gaye are a major influence of Camp Lo’s vintage yet timeless sound. Such a well-rounded background in music, film, fashion, and spirituality leads to the timelessly soulful sound of their tracks, a sound which clearly appeals to the masses. Believed to be kindred souls, the connection between Geechi Suede and Sonny Cheeba was strong long before they ever met. Having variations of the same name, dating back to Muslim upbringings and carrying impressively, optimistic perspectives on life as well as an immense fascination with the fashion and lingo of the Blaxpoitation era- although they grew up in the typically survivalist vibe of Bronx, NY- this pair was meant to come together.
