Stones Throw recording artist Homeboy Sandman is one of the most innovate and introspective MC’s in the game. Since his introduction to the world in 2007 with his project Nourishment (Second Helpings), he has been steady keeping us fed with dope hip-hop music!
From Homeboy Sandman’s website:
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPYDGNEYr1k]Homeboy Sandman is a musician. His genre is hip-hop. An emcee that prides himself on musical growth and evolution, he has adopted as his motto and creative mission statement, “Boy Sand like you’ve never seen him before. As usual.”
Raised in Queens NY. Academic stints in New Hampshire, Philadelphia, London and Long Island. One semester short on two different graduate degrees. A couple of years of NYC Public School teaching thrown in there in between. 9th and 10th grades. Some bartending too, at the legendary Lennox Lounge in Harlem. That’s where Shaft used to drink.
December 2006 he decides to cut all that miscellaneous nonsense and follow his passion. His first album came the following year.
Homeboy Sandman is fan Hip-Hop fan first and foremost! In keeping with this he has set out to create a project that is a direct tribute to the Hip-Hop Icon DJ Kool Herc. The project which will be released on May 7 is titled Kool Herc: Fertile Crescent.
From Spin.com article:
On May 7, Stones Throw will release Kool Herc: Fertile Crescent, a new eight-song set styled as “an unapologetic homage to old school hip-hop in its bare-bones production, lyrical themes, cover art and even the title.” That titular DJ, for the uninitiated, is credited with discovering the breakbeat, hence laying the very foundation of the art form. The entire thing will be produced by El RTNC (a.k.a. Rthentic) except for the track below — a soulful bubbler courtesy of Alex “Apex” Gale. For every release, Homeboy records an “Out Now” rap announcing the new songs and showcasing his verbal shine. While others would serve up a throwaway or never even bother, Sandman rhymes in the only mode he knows: full bore.
