“Bboy Boogie” by DJ Kool Herc is more than just a DOPE Bboy beat full of shout-outs to Hip-Hop greats like Rock Steady Crew, Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzy Jay, and more; it’s the sound of one of Hip-Hop’s most accomplished Founding Fathers, largely responsible for the movement’s birth.
Known for creating break-style DJing and inspiring the likes of Grandmaster Flash (@djflash4eva) and Afrika Bambaataa, who followed in Kool Herc’s footsteps propagating the movement and spreading the influence of Hip-Hop to the streets where the gang-ridden South Bronx of the early 1970s would ultimately be transformed by the music.
Parties modeled after Kool Herc’s infamous sessions at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue (credited as Hip-Hop’s birthplace) spread outward from the Bronx and figures like Afrika Bambaataa began moving gang members from the notorious Black Spades into the now-born Universal Zulu Nation, which remains strong and influential four decades later as a force for the goals of Hip-Hop as stated by James Brown and Bambaataa in 1984:
Peace, Unity, Love, and Having Fun.
Know that without DJ Kool Herc, Hip-Hop as we know it would not exist.
