“What About You” by Co Real Artists is one of the DOPEst Bboy breaks to emerge from the Soul era.
The Co Real Artists’ “What About You” is said by some to be among the very first definitive “Rap” records, and if true, it would predate many of the tracks that are widely considered to hold that title.
In any case, the group graced the legendary Funky 16 Corners album, a collection that also includes Bboy smashes from Kashmere Stage Band, Carlene & the Groovers, James Bell, and many more, with a Funky proto-breakbeat that won’t quit.
From an album review of Funky 16 Corners:
‘What About You (In The World Today)’ by the Co Real Artists is a fantastic proto-rap laid over a heavy drum track that would remind you of a more upbeat version of ‘Small Talk at 125th St & Lenox’-era Gil Scott Heron.
