Shook Mentality – DJ CHiEF

What do Big Daddy Kane, Naughty By Nature, Mobb Deep, Krayzie Bone, and DJ CHiEF have in common? This joint:

A special (free download) Friday treat for the street, this is a remix/mash/cipher sound bringing together Hip-Hop jams from the late 80s and 90s, with vocal elements first and foremost from The Infamous Mobb Deep, as well as Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, with a beat drawn from Big Daddy Kane’s “Set It Off”, Naughty By Nature’s “Uptown Anthem”, and some drops and drabs along the way.

Some notes on the production from chief.dj:

Suede Chief

Tweaking the drums from Marley Marl’s flawless sampling of Grady Tate’s “Be Black Baby,” in this case for Big Daddy Kane’s “Set It Off”, was a challenge, but the loop seemed to fit right in with low and high elements of the instrumental from Naughty By Nature’s Classic “Uptown Anthem”.

And it goes without stating that Mobb Deep’s notorious (or more accurately, infamous) acapella from “Shook Ones” is always sample-worthy.

And Krayzie Bone’s “Thug Mentality” hook really “tied the room together”, giving us a Bboy Battle song for the cipher and a trivia track for the Hip-Hop heads.
