Evil Vibrations – Mighty Ryeders

“Evil Vibrations” is a Soulful Funked-out 1978 jam from Florida’s Mighty Ryeders:

You’ll recognize most immediately this track as one of the main sample sources for De La Soul’s 1991 Bboy smash “A Rollerskating Jam Called Saturdays”:

This minor funk group hailed from Florida and was led by Rodney Mathews. Their claim to fame is “Evil Vibrations,” a rare groove classic that received a higher profile thanks to De La Soul’s sampling on “A Rollerskating Jam Named Saturday.”

Coming on like a black hippie missionary cult (a belief bolstered by the cover photo of the band sitting atop several globes featuring each of the continents), the Ryeders’ sole album is chock full of titles like “Let There Be Peace,” “Fly Away With Me,” “Star Children,” and the title song, where they lend a sense of spiritual urgency to the mix (“We got to find a better direction/Cause where we’re headed is hot as fire”). The music is good, reminiscent in places of Earth Wind and Fire, but you definitely have a feeling that these brothers were about ten years late in their politics. This was originally released in 1978 but became widely available thanks to the venerable Luv N Haight label.

But dig this Funky Breaks remix by Loco_nyan (@loco_nyan) of Nagoya, Japan (w/ Free Download) using elements of the original as well as those added by De La Soul…:

…which is a similar approach taken by The Rebirth in their 2006 (Saturday Mix) of the Mighty Ryeders jam:
