The Black Exotics took the Blackbyrds‘ Classic “Theme of Blackbyrds” and did some very Funky things to it:
At a higher tempo than the original, The Black Exotics version of “Theme” drops some major drumbreaks and Funky jimjangles throughout the joint, most definitely fit for battle rounds.
Some background from Piccadilly Records (@piccadillyrecs):
Until recently, nothing was known of The Black Exotics except that the little record they cut back in the 70s makes one hell of an impact on the dancefloor. The lead side showcases a ferocious, house-wrecking, all-drums-ahead take on Donald Byrd’s famed jazz-funk troupe and their signature melody which cooks with so much heat it’s a mercy that the 2″ tape survived the onslaught. Whilst the sturdy reels fortunately withstood the blast, now that this rendition can be granted a wider airing – can the same be said for the original song? Backed by a drummer playing with a militant determination that suggests he somehow knew that this might well be his only issued recording, the Exotics mercilessly rip all kinds of shreds and chunks out of the Blackbyrds theme.
